Tanjong Pagar MP Baey Joins CapitalLand

FORMER Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts director Baey Yam Keng joined property company Capital Land as its vice-president of corporate marketing last month. [Yam Keng is ICAAS life member, and served on ICAAS EXCO in mid 90s. ---added by Limsoon]

The MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC was one of three new People's Action Party MPs who had to leave their public sector jobs when they contested the recent general election.

The other two - former IE Singapore chief Lee Yi Shyan, 44, and former Housing Board chief Lui Tuck Yew, 44 - have been appointed ministers of state for Trade & Industry and Education respectively.

"This job is something I'm quite interested in and can develop a good professional career in," Mr Baey, 35, told The Straits Times.

His job involves looking at the positioning and branding of CapitalLand to its business partners and customers.

Mr Baey finds it similar to his previous job, where he was responsible for promoting creative industries here.

"The area of work is quite similar," he said. "At least the jump is not so great. I'm coping."

The private sector, he added, was not totally new to him as he had spent nine years in the Economic Development Board dealing with multinational and private companies.

Even as he juggles his new job and constituency commitments, Mr Baey, who co-founded Mandarin theatre group The ETCeteas, is producing a play this December.

Titled Venus Can Love, it is a romantic fantasy comedy about finding true love.
