The Singapore Armed Forces Overseas Scholarship has a long tradition of nurturing bright young men to be the SAF's future leaders. The seven scholars featured in this story are among the newest members of this elite group.
All are still in the midst of their university studies overseas, and return home during their vacations to serve attachments in the SAF. What led them down this path? How has the going been so far? And where do they see themselves headed? In this round-table discussion, they give an insight into their lives, thoughts and aspirations.

Why did you apply for the scholarship?
Yong Cong: I was fortunate to have been enlightened by my OCS instructor on what it means to be an army officer. He spoke about how he enjoyed his time as a platoon commander, leading and changing the lives of 30 men. I could see the pride in his eyes. He inspired me, and I knew that was what I wanted to do. I love the Army, its purpose and culture. When I realised that there was a military option that is offered under the Public Service Commission (PSC) scholarship, I applied for it.
How has university life been so far?
Yong Cong: The academic structure at Imperial College London is similar to what I experienced in junior college, so it was not hard to adjust. But there are so many household issues to settle, like cooking, laundry, ... At times, I feel like a housewife! You have to be strong-willed and independent to survive in an overseas university, to both handle these issues as well as keep up with school work.
All of you are back for your vacation attachment. Could you share a little on the experience?
Yong Cong: The attachment has been very useful; it gave me a first-hand experience of what it takes to run an infantry company and platoon. For the first time, I was exposed to unit soldiers from all walks of life, and it is enlightening to see the officers trying to change their lives for the better.
