Dr. Yunjie Xu (Calvin)
I am an assistant professor at the
Department of
Information Systems,
School of
Computing, National University of Singapore. I got my B.Sc. from Harbin Institute of Technology, China,
M.S. from Fudan University, China, and Ph.D. from
Syracuse University, NY, USA.
My major research interests include knowledge management and
e-commerce, but I am also interested in
exploring other related areas.
Knowledge Management
In the area of knowledge management, My focus is on knowledge and information seeking behavior
both in offline and online contexts. In the offline context,
I am particularly interested in further developing psychological
and sociological research on human information seeking behavior.
Research topics in this direction include:
- Knowledge seeking and sharing in organizational settings
- Media choice in knowledge and information seeking
- Knowledge and information seeking process theorization
In the online context, I am interested in the design of
information/knowledge retrieval systems. With a recognition of the
difference between knowledge and information, my focus of research
in on how to improve the design of search engine and
information retrieval systems to meet personal information need.
In this area, my research interests include:
- Information retrieval algorithm design
- Information retrieval performance evaluation
- Modeling of searchers' information need and personalization
- Human interaction with information seeking systems
The extant research in information science has recognized the
lack of integration between behavioral research of human
information behavior (known as user-centered studies) and
information retrieval system design (known as system-centered
studies). In knowledge management research, there is a similar gap
between the managerial side of knowledge management (known as
personal approach) and the knowledge management systems (known as
system approach). Therefore, it is my research objective to bridge the gap
between research in knowledge/information seeking behavior and
knowledge/information seeking systems.
E-commerce
In the area of e-commerce, I am interested in e-commerce
system design and online consumer behavior. Topics in this area include:
- Consumer information seeking and sharing in online social networks
- E-commerce system design and its impact on online consumer
information seeking and decision making
Other Areas
- Management information systems research in general
- Data mining
