Education

National University of Singapore, Republic of Singapore
Computer Science Department, School of Computing
   Computer Science, July 2007
   Supervisor: Ooi Beng Chin

NUS is a very beautiful campus and has many famous scholars. I enjoy my life here and feel very
gratitude to know so many kind people who help me a lot, both in my life and study.

East China Normal University, Shanghai, China
Software Engineering Institute
B.Eng.  Software Engineering, 2003-2007

It is lucky that ECNU doesn't located in the suburban of Shanghai as some other universities, so I have many opportunity to learn about the real Shanghai, China's biggest city. There are a lot of happy memories during this four years and I am glad to know so many friends there.

Research

I am working as a research post-graduate student in Computer Science.

My current areas of research focuses on Efficient Query Processing on Community Web Management System. My interest includes query processing, data management, storage structure, indexing and other issues in community systems.

Universal Table inspired storage system for free-and-easy
data publishing and  sharing

Digital information publishing and searching becomes increasingly necessary in recent years, due to the popularity of the Internet services. We have witnessed the growth of a number of such web services. While these systems vary in their particular services provided, they share the same operation mode -- users publish data items such as URLs, photos, advertisements, etc. that are associated with simple descriptions such as tags and attributes created by them. UTab is our attempt to build a general system framework for supporting such free-and-easy data publishing and searching services.

There are many research issues:

Indexing

The table is wide and large in size, with many null attribute values. It is not efficient for sequential search nor possible to map every tuple into points and indexed as high-dimensional data points. Efficient indexing is therefore important. We will design these new indexes for supporting various kinds of searches and operations.

Query processing
Query Processing Due to the relax of constraints for ease of insertion, data no longer conform to fixed structure, and attributes may be highly variable in contents and format. Further, the attributes are no longer alphanumeric with pre-defined domains. This calls for efficient query processing and optimization, in resolving conflicts and semantics during query retrieval, and identifying the relationships between tuples and their relevance.

Query Interface
With the advancement of hand held devices and wireless carriers such as PDA and Cell Phones, image and video recording devices, and editing software, query interface and visual search are evolving. We would like to examine the impact of such advancement on the demand of visual query interface and hence visual based search techniques. The pervasiveness of wireless carriers enable the composition of queries on the spot based on what the users encounter and capture, and free users from the pain of stepping through the relational schema and posing the queries in more restricted form.
