The shiny, black robotic arm gleamed as it whirred into action and ‘waved’ at us, accompanied by Alexa’s robotic, yet (somehow) cheery, disembodied greeting, “Hello! My name is MICO.” Mohit Shridhar stretched his lanky frame across the counter to place plastic replicas of a few everyday objects—a red bowl, an apple, and a banana—on the white tablecloth in front of MICO. Then Shridhar instructed, “Alexa, tell MICO to pick up the apple.” The robotic arm contorted and whirred until it held its gripper over the apple. “Do you mean this?” Alexa asked. “Alexa, tell MICO to go ahead,” Shridhar confirmed. MICO obediently, albeit mechanically, lowered its gripper and picked up the apple.

Giving food, friendship to homeless people

Since July 2014, NUS Computing alumnus and software developer Abraham Yeo has been giving food, drinks and companionship to the homeless in Singapore. Abraham co-founded an informal volunteer group, the Homeless Hearts of Singapore, to rally like-minded people together to conduct night walks and checks on the homeless.

Companies hunt for talent as Singapore tech sector continues to grow

Before NUS Computing alumnus Huang Wei Long graduated in 2017, he secured a job as a software developer with a startup after applying to about ten companies. He even received three to five offers from companies like Facebook and IBM but chose to work in a startup as it would provide more opportunities. Wei Long is one of the many university graduates that have secured jobs in Singapore's growing technology sector as the government see through its plans to digitalise the country through its Smart Nation initiatives.

2 December 2019 – NUS Computing alumna Guan Dian was one of thirteen young alumni conferred the NUS Outstanding Young Alumni Award on 27 November this year. A total of 21 exceptional NUS alumni were honoured at this year’s NUS Alumni Awards ceremony for their outstanding achievements and contributions to their alma mater and society.

NUS Computing alumna Guan Dian was one of ten young alumni conferred the NUS Outstanding Young Alumni Award at the NUS Alumni Awards ceremony held on 27 November. Guan Dian graduated from NUS Computing in 2010 and is currently the Vice-President and co-founder of Patsnap, a search and analytics engine for users to search and analyse patents.

2 NUS Undergrads Turned Our Love For Food And Discounts Into A 100k-Strong Telegram Channel

A Telegram channel, started by Computer Science alumnus Goh Wei Wen and Business school alumnus Dylan Teo, became the first in Singapore to hit 100,000 subscribers in October 2019. The pair is currently funded by a S$10,000 NUS Enterprise grant under the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practicum Award and hopes to create a platform that delivers personalised food deals for its users.

30 October 2019 – Computer Science PhD alumnus Dr Abdelhak Bentaleb was conferred the 2019 SIGMM Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis in Multimedia Computing. The award was presented at the 2019 ACM Multimedia conference held from 21 to 25 October in Nice, France.

S'pore HR Tech Startup StaffAny Founded By 4 NUS Grads Raises S$1M Funding

Human resources (HR) startup, StaffAny, co-founded by Computer Science alumnus Jeremy Hon, has raised a S$1 million in seed funding. The startup, founded in 2018 by Jeremy and his NUS Overseas Colleges friends, is a workforce management application that connects HR and operations to better manage hourly workers. StaffAny currently helps some 70 businesses manage more than 2,000 employees based in 130 outlets.

Real estate platform 99.co officially announced that it has raised a US$15.2M Series B round. 99.co, co-founded by NUS Computing alumnus Yan Phun, offers design-centric technology and data for end-users and agents. Recent Information Systems graduate Ismahfaris Ismail graduated with a Bachelor's degree of Computing with Highest Distinction. He was also a recipient of the LBKM Future Economy scholarship awarded to outstanding Malay undergraduates. Ismahfaris was offered a position with audit firm PwC after interning with the company during his undergraduate studies.

They suffered burnout, but the game these young Singaporeans created kept them going

Upon graduation, NUS Computing alumni Tan Kang Soon and Muhammad Hanif set up their own startup to produce their first video game. Despite the challenges and obstacles they faced, the duo, together with fellow alumnus Chue Sai Hou, will be releasing their game in late July on various platforms like PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Steam.

Gen Y Speaks: Three things I learned running a business to curb food wastage

In 2016, NUS Computing alumnus Kenneth Ham and NUS alumnus Preston Wong founded Treatsure, a mobile reservation app for surplus food. The team created Asia-Pacific’s first takeaway buffet-in-a-box concept in collaboration with over 10 hotels in 2018. App users can purchase a takeaway box and pack leftover food from the hotel's buffet line.

2 April 2019 – Former NUS Computing PhD student Dr Sergey Mechtaev was awarded the ACM SIGSOFT Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award on 19 March 2019. The award will be given out at the 41st ACM/IEEE International Conference on Software Engineering held in Montreal, Canada from 25 to 31 May this year.
