Twenty-five students have begun a new financial technology training programme at the Robert Mathavious Institute for Financial Services at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.
The six-month programme, the first of its kind in the territory, launched on March 21, and is hosted by HLSCC in partnership with the National University of Singapore’s School of Computing, BVI Finance, and the Virgin Islands government.
22 March 2022 – A team of four Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) graduates won first place at the AIxImpact Case Competition (Finance stream) in February this year. The case competition was held as part of the AIxImpact Conference, a Southeast Asia-focused analytics conference hosted by QuantumBlack, a McKinsey Company, in early February.
According to the Graduate Employment Survey conducted by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in November 2021, based on a sample size on 7,737 graduates from the National University of Singapore (NUS), the degree holders of medicine and law are no longer the ones getting the highest starting pay.
The H Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) in the British Virgin Islands will be offering a Financial Technology (FinTech) programme for persons interested in becoming a professional in that field of study. The FinTech Training Programme, which will commence in late March, is a collaborative project of HLSCC’s Robert Mathavious Institute for Financial Services (HLSCC-RMI, the National University of Singapore (NUS): School of Computing (NUS FinTech Lab), BVI Finance Ltd, and Ministry of Education.

In recent years, some companies, including Amazon, JP Morgan, and Unilever, began asking prospective employees to do a curious thing — to film themselves answering a fixed set of questions. The firms would then run the videos through an AI-powered software, scanning faces and eye movements for signs of empathy, dependability, and other ‘desirable’ personality traits.
13 January 2022 - Provost’s Chair Professor Atreyi Kankanhalli has won the AIS Fellow Award 2021, a prestigious award given by the Association for Information Systems (AIS) to academics in the Information Systems (IS) discipline.
When Jungpil Hahn was appointed head of the Department of Information Systems and Analytics at NUS Computing in 2015, it changed his perspective on many things.
“I began to see the broader picture of the discipline as a whole, and began to think holistically about what we are teaching and what we are missing in the overall curriculum,” recalls Associate Professor Hahn. “That’s when I saw the urgency and extent of the problem.”
The top blockchain school in the world features three blockchain-related research labs, multiple student-led cryptoclubs and offers pupils the opportunity to work with its many partners in the blockchain space. The National University of Singapore (NUS) provides a variety of blockchain and crypto-related courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as programs for continuing education. 26 August 2021 – Final-year NUS Computing students took home the top prizes at two hackathons organised by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and e-commerce platform Shopee.
Recently, video game Axie Infinity by Sky Mavis game company in Vietnam attracted many players around the world with a model of both playing and making money with NFTs. At one point, the total capitalization of AXS, the game's token, reached $2.4 billion. However, the CEO of the company has denied calling himself a dollar billionaire because the token's capitalization is different from the total capitalization of the company.
Associate Professor Keith Carter thinks that the valuation of the company and the game's token is different. "It's not fair to say that it's just a video game company, so just value it as you would for 30-year-old game companies like Blitzard or Activision," he said.

5 Aug 2021 - Six NUS Computing graduates recently won the Outstanding Computing Project Prize, a new prize that was instituted by NUS Computing in 2020.
The information and communications technology (ICT) sector is also looking to fill "tech-lite" roles, such as in digital marketing.
Minister for Communications and Information Josephine Teo said on Saturday (July 31) that aside from jobs that require people with tech skills, the sector also wants to tap the experience and knowledge of specific industries and sectors.
Associate Professor Keith Carter, from the National University of Singapore's School of Computing, said the common misconception is that it is hard to get into the technology sector. People who are interested to get into the sector should think about how their background can help them to succeed in this sector.
"We need everyone," he added.
27 July 2021 - NUS Computing faculty members Dr Lek Hsiang Hui, Dr Steven Halim, Dr Henry Chia, and Associate Professor Tan Wee Kek, were conferred the Annual Teaching Excellence Award 2020 (ATEA) for Academic Year (AY) 2018/2019 in early April this year.
