Computing for Voluntary Welfare Organisations (CVWO), initiated by NUS School of Computing Assistant Professor Ben Leong and spearheaded by a group of undergraduates has been awarded the distinguished “Friend of the Lions Befrienders” Award. The award ceremony took place at Republic Polytechnic on 5 November 2011. Major-General (NS) Chan Chun Sing, Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports was the Guest of Honour.
The Friend of the Lions Befrienders Award is the highest distinction honour conferred on exemplary individuals or organisations for their contribution to the Lions Befrienders Programme. The Befriending and Outreach programme by the Lions Befrienders Service Association (LBSA) reaches out to the elderly and engages them in leading an active lifestyle through meaningful activities and courses.
In its fifth year running, CVWO matches the computer programming skills of volunteer undergraduates to the needs of selected partner Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWO). Over the years, CVWO has since developed systems for Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS), YMCA and the Lions Befrienders Service Association to name a few. More information on CVWO can be found here.
