15 November 2017 – Associate Professor Roger Zimmermann was named a distinguished member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) on 9 November this year.

The ACM Distinguished Member award acknowledges members with at least 15 years of professional experience who have made a significant impact in the field of computing. Prof Zimmermann was one of 43 researchers named as distinguished members this year.

He received the accolade for his scientific contributions in the fields of multimedia streaming and geospatial databases. Notably, Prof Zimmermann invented the Hydra streaming media recording system. The Hydra system surpassed the design of two other media servers Prof Zimmermann co-designed and implemented during his PhD studies.

His research has also been published in IEEE Transactions on Multimedia (TMM) and ACM Multimedia 2016 for work that combines Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH).

Another noteworthy project of Prof Zimmermann’s in the field of geospatial database, is the creation of the GeoVid project, which leverages a camera’s geographic viewable scene for georeferenced video management. The research was published in ACM Multimedia 2008 and patented in 2012.

As a member of ACM, Prof Zimmermann have been actively involved in the organisation of ACM conferences for many years, most extensively with the ACM Multimedia and ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS conference series.

He was recently the programme co-chair of 2017 ACM International Conference on Interactive Experiences for Television and Online Video (TVX) and is currently involved in the 2018 ACM Multimedia Systems Conference (MMSys).

“I am very humbled and pleasantly surprised by the result,” said Prof Zimmermann.

“My thanks go to the researchers, colleagues and especially all the students whom I had the great fortune to work with over the years. Without them, it would be impossible to do team-based research.”
