Associate Professor Ilya Sergey receives the 2019 AITO Dahl-Nygaard Prize

17 April 2019 – Associate Professor Ilya Sergey was awarded the 2019 AITO Dahl-Nygaard Prize (Junior category) for his work in programming language theory. The award will be given out at the 2019 European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP) in London, England, held from 15 to 19 July.

Novel chip for wearables of the future

Wearables are fast becoming a part of our daily lives. However being small has its drawbacks. Limited by their battery size, storage capacity and computational power, wearables usually need to be paired with a smartphone in order function effectively. But this may soon be a thing of the past with Stitch, a novel processor chip developed by NUS Computing researchers led by Professors Tulika Mitra and Peh Li-Shiuan.

AI projects shortlisted to solve a major healthcare issue in Singapore

NUS Computing faculty members Professor Wynne Hsu and Professor Ooi Beng Chin will be leading research in artificial intelligence healthcare technologies. Their research projects are two of three projects funded by AI Singapore's AI in Healthcare Grand Challenge. Prof Hsu and Prof Ooi's teams will receive up to $5 million to develop its product in the next two years.

ViSenze raises $20 million to further develop its AI product comparison tools

Image recognition startup ViSenze, co-founded by Professor Chua Tat Seng and NUS Computing graduate Li Guangda, announced that it has raised $20 million in a series C funding round, following a $10.5 million series B raise in September 2016. ViSenze was spun out from NUS Computing’s NExT++ research centre in 2012.

New app allows pre-diabetics to use photos of their meal to check if it is healthy

To help people with pre-diabetes or a high risk of diabetes to better manage their condition, NUS Computing Distinguished Professor Ooi Beng Chin and his team developed an AI enabled mobile application the JurongHealth Food Log (JHFoodLg) app, that analyses food photos taken by the user and displays the dish’s nutritional values.

Two new research centres to develop privacy-preserving tech and train talent

The National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF) has set up two research centres to carry out cutting-edge research to design and develop privacy-preserving technologies and train skilled manpower, as part of the city-state’s Smart Nation push. The first is the NUS Centre for Research in Privacy Technologies (N-CRiPT), to be based in the National University of Singapore (NUS) School of Computing. It will be led by Professor Mohan Kankanhalli, Dean of the NUS School of Computing.

18 January 2019 – The NUS Centre for Research in Privacy Technologies (N-CRiPT) was launched on 15 January 2019 at the centre’s Inaugural Workshop. The new S$12 million research centre, funded by the National Research Foundation, will carry out leading research to design and develop privacy-preserving technologies to build a privacy aware Smart Nation for Singapore.
