I am a Postdoctoral Research Follow in Computer Science at School of Computing, National University of Singapore (NUS). Currently, my research focuses on designing and building practical machine/deep learning models for large-scale real-world networked systems. Specifically, it focuses on investigating a new paradigm based on practical machine/deep learning techniques for solving challenging QoE optimization and congestion control problems in large-scale video delivery systems. Rather than design fixed algorithms, the aim is to develop data-driven systems that can dynamically learn to optimize the performance on their own using modern machine and deep learning techniques (e.g., deep reinforcement learning). As a result of well understanding and optimizing the video streaming QoE as well as adjusting congestion control based on various requirements of video streaming applications and services (e.g., live low latency, on-demand, 6DoF, cloud gaming, etc) . During my PhD, I was advised by Prof. Roger Zimmermann and my work interest is on Video Streaming Architecture, Content Delivery, Multimedia Systems, and Computer Networks. I am a member of Media Management Research Lab and working on Streaming Media project. I design and develop a novel suite of Adaptive Bitrate (ABR) solutions to address the key challenges of video delivery including quality instability, unfairness, and network resources under/over utilization for HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) systems (DASH and HLS). I am fortunate to work with an exceptional collaborator Prof. Ali C. Begen.

Current Main Projects

Learning-based ABR Solutions

We investigate new paradigm based on machine and deep learning techniques for solving challenging QoE optimization problems in HAS-based video delivery system

Centralized-based ABR Solutions

We investigate how a central entity like Software Defined Networking (SDN) controller assist the video players in their bitrate selection and bandwidth allocation. Such central entity has a general overview and control over the network, and thus an appropriate ABR decision will be taken by the players.

Distributed-based ABR Solutions

We investigate how distributed rules (e.g., game theory, queuing theory, and multisource/multipath mechanism) can be leveraged by the client-driven ABR scheme. Thus, the set of video players cooperate and coordinate among themselves to achieve their common objective (i.e., maximizing the viewer QoE) without any implicit or explicit signaling messages.
