STUDENTS' COMMENTS ON TEACHER

Faculty Member:  LEONG WING LUP, BEN
Department:  COMPUTER SCIENCE Academic Year:  2011/2012
Faculty:  SCHOOL OF COMPUTING Semester:  1
Module:PROGRAMMING METHODOLOGY - CS1101S
Activity Type:LECTURE

Q9  What are the teacher's strengths?
1.Interactive and engaging.
2.Very engaging and passionate, willing to help students along the way - able to make dry topics interesting. Clearly knowledgeable and demonstrates deep understanding of the subject.
3.Can explain complex ideas easily. Makes lecture interesting.
4.Really enjoyed his lecture sessions. Even though the content gets progressively and exponentially more difficult, he'll take the effort to ensure that everyone understands what the hell is going on.
5.Managing complexity in the class is particularly well-done - meaning everyone seems to be challenged equally at some point of time, no matter who is weaker or stronger. The lectures pull ahead at bullet-train speed coupled with ample time for tutorial and recitations to clear up the confusion later on is a great teaching method.
6.Keeps things simple Clear about expectations for the course Interesting
7.explanation
8.He is a very friendly and approachable teacher. He is also very innovative because he incorporated gaming in the process of learning to make this exhausting module less painful but more fun.
9.he has a very strong aptitude for making sure students learn, in, out of the classroom, and during exams.
10.He is very clear in his teaching, and is very engaging.
11.Everything.
12.Despite having spent only four months learning from him, I can say without any doubt that Professor Ben Leong is the best teacher I have had till date. He is one of the few teachers who actually understand their students (nerd 'gets' nerd? :D) There are two aspects of Prof Ben that I greatly respect and admire: his teaching; and his philosophy. On the teaching front, he is at an entirely different level compared to others. His lectures are incredibly comprehensive and VERY well structured. Prof Ben even pays attention to the 'lesser' things like the visual appeal of his slides, which, in my opinion, counts for a lot. Typically, I find most of my classes a bit slow, and therefore, dull. However, Prof Ben's lectures are delivered at the perfect speed, yet with great attention to detail, and never too fast to grasp. The questions he asks in class are great, and really encourage you to think. He focuses on making the student learn how to think, not just how to apply the standard techniques of programming. The lectures actually talk more about how to apply your mind, than how to apply a certain concept. In his own words, Prof Ben aims to teach you how to Manage Complexity, and he does it well! On the philosophy end, Prof Ben acts as a real guide. The simplest example is the 'video breaks' in the longer lectures. He shows you things that inspire you, please you, amuse you, and make you think more deeply about questions that matter. Discussions with him are always a pleasure, and quite enlightening too.
13.Speak fast, no time wasting. To show in break is a good idea.
14.Logic is very clear. Concise and fast speaking. Provide us with moral concepts.
15.HE IS A GREAT MAN!
16.Very interactive and engaging. The prof is also very knowledgeable.
17.The teacher is good at teaching, knowledgeable and humorous.

Q10  What improvements would you suggest to the teacher?
1.Dual-wield Lightsabers? Continue to give timely advice to your students. They help a lot.
2.Don't leave CS1101S
3.more fun question...
4.None.
5.-
6.-Nil-
7.Very scary professor. I would also appreciate if there were less sex-related comments made in class.
8.nil.
9.Not being used to his style of speech, I initially found his lectures a bit difficult to understand, but that problem didn't last long. And PLEASE, PLEASE come back to teach again before we graduate! :D
10.No
11.NO NEED!
12.It turns out... he's pretty evil... how cool is that? (he knows what this means)

STUDENTS' NOMINATIONS FOR BEST TEACHING

Faculty Member:  LEONG WING LUP, BEN
Department:  COMPUTER SCIENCE Academic Year:  2011/2012
Faculty:  SCHOOL OF COMPUTING Semester:  1
Module Code:CS1101SNo of Nominations:19

1.Professor Leong has made what is seen as a difficult course extremely enjoyable all throughout the semester, and has encouraged students to improve themselves not just in academic matters, but also in those pertaining to life as a whole - an area arguably more important than just focussing on gaining knowledge relating to the subject. His style of teaching makes attending lectures something to look forward to, and he is able to clearly illustrate difficult topics.
2.Prof Ben makes the whole module fun. Other than the course syllabus, he will talk to us about life skills. Exam questions are practical and realistic. I enjoyed being taught by him.
3.Super Lecturer! Not only is he able to teach, he also makes learning enjoyable.
4.He cares for the students learning at his expense
5.super interesting lectures and evil questions for exam and practice. even with the fast pace during lecture, student can still understand what he is teaching
6.excellent teacher
7.-
8.He is very engaging, and is a very effective teacher.
9.He cares about everyone in class. Helpful not only in term of this module, but also in his philosophy of work attitude and life attitude.
10.I believe the job of the teacher is to help students grow, and to lead by example. With his phenomenal teaching skills, Prof Ben Leong certainly does the first job well. The lessons he teaches, in both Computer Science, as well as life and philosophy in general, have a deep impact on his students. He is an excellent role model, who inspires us to dream bigger, and work harder. As for leading by example, his interest and passion in the way he teaches fills the students with a sense of purpose and direction, and teaches us to be interested and passionate in what we do as well. It has already taken me almost two hours to write an evaluation for his module CS1101S, but I'm sure I've still overlooked some aspects of his interaction with students. I do not know many other teachers in NUS, but my evaluation, and the evaluations of his other students, should make it clear that Prof Ben Leong is the most deserving of the award for Teaching Excellence.
11.Dr Ben is an excellent teacher. He has logical and critical thinking ability. He is able to use many interesting ways to demonstrate what he want to teach. He provides us with useful, effective and timely feedback.
12.He is brilliant! He can make students learn, no however difficult the knowledge is.
13.The teaching skills of the nominee are excellent.
