CS6380 Topics in Information Systems I

Aim

The aim of this module is to train information systems research students on current research in human computer interaction in the information systems area. In the process of studying current HCI / IS research, we will also discuss theories and research methodologies where necessary. There will be lots of class discussion. Students will get to review articles and practice writing research proposals.

Required background: students are expected to have taken a research methodology module, such as CS4250 or CS6305. Students without such background should read those module materials as soon as possible.

Reading Materials

In general, students will be expected to be familiar with the major publication outlets (journals and conferences) for HCI / IS research, and to read recent HCI / IS publications (published within the last 5 years).

An illustrative, but not comprehensive, list is here. Students are not expected to read all these articles. On the other hand, students are expected to also read other articles. Selected articles for class discussion will be / are shown in the schedule table.

Assessment

CA: 60% (Assignment I: 5%, II: 15%, III: 25%; Article review: 5%; class participation: 10%)

exam (open book): 40%.
