Lab alumnus won PhD Thesis Awards

Pingcheng Ruan, a former PhD student supervised by Prof. Beng Chin Ooi, has received an Honorable Mention for the 2022 ACM SIGMOD Jim Gray Dissertation Award and the IMDA Excellence in Computing Prize 2022 from NUS School of Computing for his thesis titled “BLOCKCHAINS: NOVEL DATA SYSTEMS AND BEYOND”.

The ACM SIGMOD Jim Gray Dissertation Award is given annually to recognize excellent research by doctoral candidates in the database field. The SIGMOD Jim Gray Doctoral Dissertation Award Committee determines to the recipient(s) of the award.

The NUS Computing’s IMDA Excellence in Computing Prize is awarded to the PhD student with the best thesis in the School.

Pingcheng started his PhD degree in 2016 and his research focus is on blockchains. His interests spans from distributed systems, databases to all other large-scale data processing platforms. The thesis has made significant contributions to the scalability and usability of permissioned blockchain systems.
