Note:
1. A 5-point scale is used for the scores. The higher the score, the better the rating.
2. Fac. Member Avg Score: The mean of all the scores for each question for the faculty member.
3. Fac. Member Avg Score Std. Dev: A measure of the range of variability. It measures the extent to which a faculty member's Average Score differs from all the scores in the faculty member's evaluation. The smaller the standard deviation, the greater the robustness of the number given as average.
4. Dept Avg Score :
 (a) the mean score of same activity type (Lecture) within the department.
 (b) the mean score of same activity type (Lecture), at the same module level ( level 5000 ) within the department.
5. Fac. Avg Score :
 (c) the mean score of same activity type (Lecture) within the faculty.

STUDENTS' COMMENTS ON TEACHER

Q9  What are the teacher's strengths?
1.Dr. Kan is excellent--one of the best teachers I've ever known. His knowledge of the field makes the lectures rich of content, and his sense of humor makes the lectures enjoyable. I like his American English too--it makes me feel SOC more international and broad-minded. (Some lecturers in SOC still have prejudice towards international students--and that is really not good.) Dr. Kan increased my research interest in this and related fields of study and inspired me to have many new ideas, from which I benefitted in other work too. He cares for his students very much and the students are very grateful for that. Overall, Dr. Kan has great positive impact on my student life in NUS. I'll always be grateful to his teachings, not only in academics, but also in social morals and self-cultivation.
2.conscientious and careful, strict but kindly, helpful
3.Min is very friendly and approachable. His lectures are very organized and engaging. Sometimes he links the materials in class with some of the current trends and discoveries and this is very enlightening and refreshing.
4.Prof. Kan is the most approachable teacher I have known. He paid a lot of attention to our questions and feedback of his lectures.
5.good at consualtion and responsible
6.Very approachable and very willing to help
7.- Detailed assessments of assignments are helpful - A good listener to feedback - Recordings of lectures are also useful - Articulate in speaking - Overall a dedicated and capable teacher
8.approachable, considerate, thoughtful, answers to feedback, explains clearly, dislikes math.
9.He is clear in his deliverance, effective in explaining concepts in class.
10.Your lectures are well structured and it's very interesting how people have came up with methods of text processing. (though I think the concepts are hard and advanced) I think it is good effort on your part to record every lecture and even to re-record certain lectures that didn't get recorded. Thanks for that! The recorded lectures will be helpful. I haven't come across a webcast/recorded lecture from level 3000 modules onwards! I like your idea of class participation being talking in class, and responding or asking questions in the forum, and also emailing you about questions. This indeed gives a class for less outspoken students to voice their thoughts. Encouraging students to post in the forum and asking more questions about homework is also putting the students at ease if they fear that they're asking a stupid question. Sometimes, you respond to a question by first thanking the student for the question. I think that makes the student more assured that the question is one that is worth asking and not anything dumb. It also encourages that student and the rest to post more and help each other. Thanks a lot! Oh it's also good trying to get to know the names of the students. The course also makes me think that a level 5000 module such as this one isn't as scary(except for hw2!), though I think some are).

Q10  What improvements would you suggest to the teacher?
1.His American English seems to be a double edged sword--it encouraged international students to speak out in class but also disencouraged some Singaporean students to speak out (or are there too few Singaporean students in class?). Anyway, his lectures are unforgettable.
2.If possible, tutorials can be held within the lecture time schedule.
3.nil
4.- None that are significant, perhaps further improve speaking style from articulate to engaging.
5.a bit heartless in setting the level of difficulty in the assignments...
6.The recorded lectures does sound a little monotonous, which is what you mention in class to us before. I think it will be good if classes don't drag til too late as students will be really tired and can't absorb that much if it's too late. (I'm refering to those classes that have the additional tutorials) Will be good if tutorials could start an hour before the lecture time, but I also understand that you could not get a classroom for that(if I'm not wrong). And yes, I think that homework 2 was very difficult for me. Some more detailed guide would be good on how to use the tools to do certain nlp parsing etc. It actually took me very long to figure out how to get the tools to work, and end up, i did not get it to work. Homework 1 was relatively easier in the sense that the most basic submission could be one that just sends the entire text to the search engine to get the websites. But for homework 2, there was no basic submission that is possible. A great amount of work has to be done to extract the things.

STUDENTS' NOMINATIONS FOR BEST TEACHING

Faculty Member:  KAN MIN-YEN
Department:  COMPUTER SCIENCE Academic Year:  2008/2009
Faculty:  SCHOOL OF COMPUTING Semester:  1

Module Code:CS5246No of Nominations:4

1.Dr. Kan's knowledge of the field makes the lectures rich of content, and his sense of humor makes the lectures enjoyable. The forum of this module in IVLE is always very active, and he always provides timely, useful, meaningful, and inspiring feedbacks. He is THE BEST lecturer I've ever known in my 6 year student life in NUS (undergrad + postgrad). I hope he gets elected at least once, though I know that this class size is not as big as many others and the number of nominations may not be as large as others'. However, the excellence of teaching could not be simply counting the number of nominations. If the award is about doing research, promoting NUS, etc., there may be a lot of other professors who are as good as Dr. Kan; however, this award is about outstanding educator, then Dr. Kan deserves it most. I also know that Dr. Kan does not care very much about awards etc., because he spent too much time caring for his students--he hoped the best of all of them and thinks very little for himself. I have known Dr. kan for a very long time, and I think it's unfair if he's not elected even once for outstanding educator awards.
