2018 ICPC Asia Singapore Preliminary Contest (Online)

Saturday, 15 September 2018, 10AM-3PM SGT (GMT+8) (999 days to go)

  • The basic Preliminary Contest rules are detailed at the sites below:
    1. ICPC Regional Rules
    2. ICPC Asia Director Blog
  • Additional rules specific to this Online Preliminary Contest are as follow:
    1. Accepted teams are allowed to attempt this online contest from anywhere with Internet Access.
      1. Recommended: TeamS from the same University are encouraged to do this online contest at the same venue.
      2. Optional: If possible, firewall the computer network so that only https://asiasg18-prelim.kattis.com/ is accesible during the contest.
    2. Each coach (a faculty member of that team's University) is strongly recommended to supervise his/her team(s) during the 5-hours online contest so that ICPC rules are respected, especially on these three important points:
      1. The usage of only one computer per team of three students.
      2. The usage of only hard copy reference materials, up to 25 pages single-sided, letter or A4 size.
      3. The member of each team can only discuss the problemset among the three of them during that 5-hours. This includes not searching the Internet for solution/reference source code
    3. Coach is strongly encouraged to take photos of their team(s) working on the preliminary contest before/around the start of the contest and right after the end of the preliminary contest. Submit these photos (properly labeled with appropriate team name) to the RCD (email: stevenha@comp.nus.edu.sg) for documentation and verification purposes as soon as the prelim contest ends.
    4. The result of this online Preliminary Contest is not final until the organizers perform random checks on code submitted by top 60 qualified teams.
  • Participation in this online Preliminary Contest is free of charge.
  • All participants must register for this Preliminary Contest at the official ICPC website.
  • Registration has been closed by Monday, 10 September 2018, 23:59 SGT (GMT+8).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can teams register for the Regional Contest if they do not participate in this Preliminary Contest?
A: No. Doing well in this Preliminary Contest is the pre-requisite to advance to the Regional Contest.
However, a small number of wildcard slots are reserved for teams from foreign Universities who missed this Preliminary Contest date.
Such wildcard slots are given by the RCD to such teams on special case basis.
Priorities will be given to teams from Universities with prior history in past ICPCs.
If your team falls into this category, i.e. your team miss the Saturday, 15 September 2018 preliminary contest and your University has prior history in past ICPCs, please contact the RCD directly.
Q: Will foreign teams be allowed to appeal to compete in the Regional Contest even if they are not one of the top 45 foreign teams?
A: Due to space limitations, we can only accommodate 60 teams (15 local/45 foreign) of 3 students on the contest floor.
However, if some of the top 60 teams from this preliminary contest are unable to compete onsite, we will offer their places to the next best ranked foreign teams.
Q: Can (strong) teams participate in this Preliminary Contest for practice, eligible to advance (be in the top 15 local/45 foreign teams), but subsequently not joining the associated Regional Contest with intention to join two other Asia Regional Contests this year?
A: Please refer to ICPC Asia Director Blog (2014), point no 6.a.. The key points are copied below. The RCD suggests that team with such intention to just practice with the Preliminary Contest problems, which will be made available to public, after 15 September 2018.
... An Asia Regional Contest Site includes both the On-site Regional contest (tier-2) and the (tier 3) First Round Online Regional Sub-Contest(s). The registration limit of two sites per year per student applies to both Asia Regional Site and their associated Online Regional Sub-contest. Both tier form one Asia regional site...
  • All registered teams must use accounts in Kattis to compete in this Preliminary Contest.
  • Programming languages that are allowed for this Preliminary Contest are all languages that are supported by Kattis, including Python 2 and Python 3. However, the Scientific Committees only ensure that all problems are solvable with C++ and Java.
  • The result of Preliminary Contest will only be made official after we perform random plagiarism checks to code submitted by top 45 foreign teams and top 15 local teams. Teams that are proven to plagiarize will be automatically disqualified.
  • Contestants may register for a free account at Kattis to become familiar with the judging system that will be used in this contest. Contestants should read the Kattis documentation prior to joining the contest.
  • Registered NUS teams are invited to compete onsite at NUS School of Computing, refreshments are provided and the details have been announced separately to these NUS teams.

This is the link to the Preliminary Contest scoreboard that includes the problemset.

Coaches and the more technically gifted spectators can join the public, open contest instead (that will start 15m after the official one starts).

Afterwards, future contestants can train with this problemset at Kattis.

The detailed RCD report with full problem set pre-contest prediction and post-contest analysis can be found here.

Contest photos submitted by various teams can be found in this public Facebook album.

  • We have prepared these set of trophies and cash prizes worth exactly S$5,000 for the following categories:
    1. "Champion", "Runner-up", "Second Runner-up", and "Third Runner-up"
The "Champion", "Runner-up", "Second Runner-up", and "Third Runner-up" teams must come from FOUR (4) different Universities.
In another word, the top FOUR (4) teams from FOUR (4) different Universities will get the prizes.
The "Champion" team will receive S$1,500.
The "Runner-up" team will receive S$1,200.
The "Second Runner-up" team will receive S$900.
The "Third Runner-up" team will receive S$600.
    2. "First Team to Solve a Problem" as recorded by Kattis.
The First Team to solve any problem will receive S$50.
Remarks: This is a risky prize as some teams may submit without actually test first...
    3. "First Team to Solve Problem [A/B/C/D/E/F/G/H/I/J/K/L]" as recorded by Kattis.
There are N=12 problems posed in this Regional Contest and the first team (from any University) to solve each problem will get a prize.
The First Team to solve a problem X where X ∈ [A/B/C/D/E/F/G/H/I/J/K/L] will receive S$50.
There is no limit on how many "First to Solve" prize that a single team can win.
Therefore, the "First Team to Solve a Problem" will actually get S$50+S$50 = S$100.
    4. "Last Team to Solve a Problem" as recorded by Kattis.
The Last Team to solve any problem just before the end of contest (e.g. AC at minute 299, as recorded by Kattis, just before 'End of Contest' signal) will receive S$150.
Remarks: This is a very risky prize...
