Long Biography

Angela Yao is a Dean's Chair Associate Professor and Assistant Dean for Research in the School of Computing at the National University of Singapore. She leads the Computer Vision and Machine Learning (CVML) group, doing research on human-centric vision and video understanding, with a focus on building contextual AI systems that can perceive, reason about, and assist with human activity in real-world and embodied settings.

Angela's research has been recognised by Singapore's NRF Investigatorship (2026, for mid-career researchers pursuing high-risk research) and NRF Fellowship for AI (2019, for early-career researchers establishing an independent group), and the German Pattern Recognition Award (2018), awarded to an outstanding researcher under 35 in pattern recognition and computer vision. Her work on self-supervised 3D hand pose estimation was a finalist for the CVPR Best Paper Award in 2019.

Before joining NUS, Angela led the Visual Computing group at the University of Bonn as a Junior Professor from 2015 to 2018. She co-founded Parquery AG, a smart parking company spun out of ETH Zurich, where she completed her PhD. She studied Engineering Science at the University of Toronto.
