LIAO Yan

Instructor (Educator Track)

  • MSc. (Data Science, University of Queensland)
  • BEng. (Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University)

Liao Yan (Josh) is an educator and educational researcher whose work sits at the intersection of technology-enhanced learning and applied artificial intelligence education. He has taught across university and polytechnic settings, lecturing on machine learning, data science, and generative AI. In his current role with NUS Computing, he delivers courses under the Department of Information Systems and Analytics and contributes to the Artificial Intelligence Competence Programme, while pursuing research on technology-enhanced learning, ed-tech, and the use of large language models to improve student motivation and engagement. Previously, Josh served as a Lecturer at Temasek Polytechnic, where he led subjects in machine learning, deep learning, and speech recognition, developed new curricula—including no-code machine learning modules for design learners—and coordinated applied AI projects through the institution’s AI Application Centre. He has also taught as an academic tutor at The University of Queensland and as a teaching assistant at Nanyang Technological University, supporting students in both foundational and applied technical subjects. Josh’s academic interests focus on curriculum design, instructional innovation, and the pedagogical integration of AI tools in higher education. His work emphasises making complex technical concepts accessible through relatable, engaging learning experiences, and he is deeply invested in connecting with learners to support their growth. Complementing his teaching, he brings practical experience in data science and machine learning from roles in industry and research laboratories, which informs his applied, practice-oriented approach to education.
