Digital Transformation, Platforms & Innovation

The researchers working on the research area of digital transformation, platforms, and innovations are at the forefront of the economic and societal shift toward digitalisation. They seek to develop and test models, frameworks, and solutions contributing to knowledge creation and refinement.

Of particular interest is to provide actionable insights to practitioners on managing and designing digitalisation efforts and digital platforms for innovation through strong partnerships and collaboration with industry players (digital and non-digital native organisations).

What We Do

Deliver strategic and actionable frameworks and guidelines that offer structured approaches to managing digital transformation and fostering innovation.

Create knowledge on platforms’ design, functioning, and performance where agents collaborate and compete.

Design, develop, and evaluate innovative solutions leveraging emerging technologies to address modern institutional challenges.

Sub Areas

Our Research Projects

Employee Wellness

TEO Hock Hai

Developing a fatigue prediction system for Singapore Airlines (SIA) crews, coupled with napping and scheduling strategies. These initiatives, along with a digital data platform, could save S$16 million and cut standby needs by 25%.

AI Over-reliance in Education

TEO Hock Hai

The project investigates whether ChatGPT fosters student over-reliance, potentially impacting learning outcomes. Its goal is to comprehend AI's influence and propose effective integration strategies in education.

Efficient Pricing and Information Design of Digital Economies

ZHAI Yingda

This project explores how to improve efficiency and profit in digital economies with limited resources. The goal is to find the best way to manage information and pricing to optimize resource allocation and profit, potentially benefiting both businesses and users.

Impact of E-marketplaces on the Operational Performance of Traditional Businesses and Industries

Varun KARAMSHETTY

This project investigates how e-marketplaces affect established businesses, particularly in industries like restaurants, focusing on processes and efficiency. It examines how digital platforms impact food-waste, marketing, and information sharing.

Economics of AI Pricing on E-Commerce Platforms

GOH Khim Yong

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) pricing agents has become prevalent, with many digital platforms including e-commerce platforms (ECPs), introducing AI pricing agents to provide sellers with AI-generated price recommendations. This project aims to apply relevant theoretical perspectives to examine factors that influence AI recommendation adoption, and the impact of such adoption on ECPs.

Designing New App Features: Imitate, Innovate or Follow the Crowd

Aditya KARANAM

Traditionally, product development ideas came from firms to the users, but now, user reviews on online platforms offer valuable insights. This research helps developers know when to take user suggestions into account and when to trust their instincts for creating better apps, especially when it comes to incorporating innovative and imitative features.

Investigation on Digital Platforms and Human-machine Co-behavior Through AI, Empirical and Experimental Methods

SUN Chenshuo

This proposal investigates the impact of digital technologies on consumer behavior across e-commerce and social media platforms. Focusing on voice AI in shopping, filter bubbles in recommender systems, and social features affecting search volume, the project aims to provide valuable insights and address key questions in these domains.

Enhancing Adult Learning Using A Mobile Micro-Learning Platform With Integrated Nudging Interventions: A Design-Based Research Approach

OH Lih Bin

Adult learning research often overlooks the diversity of learners and conflates perception with reality. This project tackles this by: 1) creating distinct adult learner archetypes, 2) developing a mobile micro-learning platform (informed by cognitive load and nudging theories) tailored to these archetypes, and 3) investigating its impact on learning outcomes.

The Effect of Health IT on Behavior Change and Its Business Value

Nakyung KYUNG

Mobile apps for physical activity fade post-removal, proving ineffective for at-risk groups. This project targets global sedentary lifestyles with personalized strategies, using mobile tech and self-tracking for enduring health interventions. It aims to grasp the impact of targeted mobile interventions, particularly for extended behavior change in at-risk populations.

  • Digital Strategy

Mandated vs Autonomous AI Use: An Empirical Examination on Worker's Labor Outcomes and Social Welfare

Nakyung KYUNG

Amid AI reshaping employee interactions, our project examines mandated vs. autonomous AI impacts on worker empowerment, labor outcomes, and firm/societal welfare. Focused on food delivery platforms, using randomized field experiment data, we aim to compare worker performance, assess efficacy for diverse groups, measure effects on platforms and society, and propose ethical AI design principles.

  • Digital Disruptions, Regulation of Technologies and Platforms

Value Co-Creation on E-Commerce and/or Sharing Economy

HENG Cheng Suang

This project examines how platform entry into the spaces of its partners (complementors) affects both joint value creation and individual value capture. While previous research focuses on entry as competition, this study explores its impact on overall value, complementor strategies for protection, and unique entry patterns in e-commerce.

  • Digital Strategy

Information Structure Design and Social Learning when Facing Information Manipulation

JIN Chen

Addressing the surge in fake information dissemination on e-commerce and social media platforms, the project aims to explore optimal information structures to combat issues such as fake orders, reviews, and misinformation.

  • Regulation of Technologies and Platforms

Exploring the Evolution of Entrepreneurs' Ideas in Nascent Ventures

LIM Shi Ying

Nascent ventures often change their initial ideas due to uncertain market conditions and limited resources. This project aims to understand how digital artifacts influence entrepreneurs' strategic reorientations and their effects on venture performance.

Social-Mobile and E-Commerce Live Streaming Videos and Socio-Economic Impacts

GOH Khim Yong

Live streaming is booming across social media and e-commerce platforms. However, the dynamics of broadcaster-audience interactions and their impact on engagement and purchasing are largely unexplored. This project seeks to address this gap by examining the elements in live streaming that stimulate social presence and emotional arousal, and influence viewer engagement and consumer purchases.

Digitalization for Disaster Response Mission

TAN Chuan Hoo

The climate crisis lurks in the background and steadily instills disasters, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, floods, landslides, and cyclones. This research project examines how technology can be designed and implemented to support activated disaster response organizations in their operations.

Growing Technological Relatedness to the ICT Industry and Its Impacts

Aditya KARANAM

We create an inter-sectoral citation network using 1.3 million patents granted between 1981 and 2010 across all industries in the U.S. In this network space, we find a significant increase over time in the proximity of non-ICT industries to the ICT industry. This “ICT-Closeness” significantly increases innovation performance and creates hyper-competition among the firms in the citing industry.

Our Research Groups

Garbage Can Lab

HAHN Jungpil

The Garbage Can Lab (https://garbcan.com/) conducts research focused on better understanding today's complex socio-technical world and developing solutions that create impact. Inspired by the Garbage Can Model of Organizational Choice (Cohen et al. 1972), our research group can best be described as an organized anarchy with problematic preferences, unclear technology and fluid participation.
