This course is part of the (SCTP) NUS Data Engineering Programme. Applicants are required to register for all SCTP courses.

Course Overview

This course aims to equip participants with the foundational skills and practical experience required to use Structured Query Language (SQL) for querying and managing relational data. It provides a comprehensive introduction to database design and SQL fundamentals, emphasizing their applicability and versatility in any technical role.

The course will focus on hands-on exercises, helping participants effectively use SQL’s capabilities for data retrieval, filtering, and aggregation. By the end of the course, learners will gain the essential skills to use SQL for key database tasks, such as data manipulation and analysis.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Understand the core principles of relational databases (RDBMS) and structured query language
Perform Data Retrieval: Execute efficient queries to selectively retrieve, project, and structure data from database tables
Refine and Organise Data: Use querying, including filtering and sorting, to extract, and present query results
Manage Data Quality: Implement methods to standardize data formats, manage data types, and reliably handle missing or ambiguous values (NULLs) within queries
Conduct Data Aggregation: Apply grouping and summarisation functions to transform raw data into meaningful metrics and reports for analysis
