MSc+PhD (by Research)

The MSc+PhD by research programme is open to Singaporean graduates who have strong interests in embarking on computing research. The applicant should possess a good honours degree (or equivalent) in computing or related discipline.

Candidates in this programme spend up to two years on advanced level courses before completing the Master of Science degree with a research project that culminates in a research thesis. Upon completing the MSc degree, outstanding candidates may be offered immediate admission to be part of our premier research-based programme leading to a doctoral degree. Such doctoral candidates are able to accelerate in the subsequent PhD programme by gaining coursework and PhD qualifier exemptions.

Detailed information on the research interests of our faculty members can be found here.

Structure of Programme

Candidates are initially admitted to the full-time MSc programme either to the Department of Computer Science (CS) or Department of Information Systems and Analytics (DISA). To graduate with the MSc degree, candidates are required to complete the prescribed number of advanced level courses and successfully defend the MSc research thesis.

Scholarships

Financial assistance in the form of Research Scholarship will be offered to Singaporean candidates who are initially admitted to the MSc by research programme. The scholarship, offered on a competitive basis to full-time research students who meet the admission criteria, will carry monthly emoluments, plus full tuition fee subsidy. They are tenable for one year in the first instance and renewable annually for up to two years for MSc candidates, subject to satisfactory performance.

Note: Non-Singaporean students who wish to apply for a similar research programme may apply for the Master of Computing (with dissertation option on a self-supporting basis), followed by a PhD programme; or to apply for a direct PhD by research programme (with scholarship support).
