Double Degree Programmes in Business Analytics and Economics

Overview of Programme

Business analytics studies the application of data analysis to improve business performance. Economics focuses on the behaviour and interactions of different types of economic agents (consumers, workers, firms, government, etc.), and how economies work. They are complementary disciplines that build on each other, but with different focuses (namely, a business focus vs. a focus on the whole society).

Combining the tools and applications of both will give students a broader ability to add value in business settings, both with an understanding of the different aspects of the economy that may be relevant to the business as well as the in-depth business skills covered in business analytics. Likewise, those involved in economic analysis, economic consulting and economic policy will have a better appreciation of business decision making in practice.

The DDP programme enables students to attain, by the time of graduation:

  • Strong knowledge of data analytics, computing and economics foundations and fundamentals, including (a) familiarity with data analytics and programming principles, (b) high and broad understanding of the application of analytics in various industrial domains, and (c) in-depth understanding of economics policies and levers to fuel the development of Singapore economy.
  • An ability to function effectively in teams to accomplish a common goal.
  • An understanding of professional, ethical, legal, security, social issues and responsibilities of analytics and economics professionals.
  • An ability to analyse the local and global impact of data analytics on individuals, organisations, society and global economic ecosystem.
  • Recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in continuous professional development. 

Admissions (Direct and In-progress)

Students will be admitted to the double degree programme only if they meet the requirements of both the School of Computing and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. A Programme Committee comprising staff members from both faculties will review the student applications. Admission is on competitive basis and on academic merits.

Students may be admitted to the programme in one of three ways:

  1. By direct application from Junior College, Polytechnic or other pre-universities/institutions.
  2. By application during their first year of study in the School of Computing.
  3. By application during their first year of study in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Exit from Double Degree Programme

Students can choose to leave the programme or can be required to leave it if they fail to meet the continuation requirements. Students who choose to leave the double honours degree programme are permitted to work for a single degree in either one of the two disciplines instead. The continuation requirements for DDPs are as follows:
  • For students admitted from AY2021/22 onwards: A student must maintain a GPA of at least 3.50 in courses contributing to the original degree and a GPA of at least 3.50 for the second degree, from his/her second active regular semester onwards. The DDP continuation rule is not applicable once a student’s total cumulative units exceed 140 units.
  • For students admitted from AY2014/15 to AY2020/21: A student must maintain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.75 in courses contributing to the original degree, and a GPA of at least 3.25 for the second degree, following the first active semester during which the S/U options of the grade free scheme are exercised. The DDP continuation requirement is not applicable once a student’s total cumulative units exceeds 160 units.
  • For students admitted from AY2021/22 onwards: A student must maintain a GPA of at least 3.50 in courses contributing to the original degree and a GPA of at least 3.50 for the second degree, following the first active semester during which the S/U options of the grade free scheme are exercised. The DDP continuation rule is not applicable once a student’s total cumulative units exceeds 140 units.
A student will be issued a warning if he/she does not meet the continuation requirements in a semester, and will be required to withdraw from the DDP by withdrawing from the second degree programme if he/she does not meet the continuation requirements for any two consecutive semesters. A student may decide to withdraw or can be asked to withdraw from the Double Degree programme by withdrawing from the second degree programme. However, he/she is not allowed to withdraw from the first degree (i.e. originally offered degree) programme and transfer to the second degree programme. All the courses that the student has taken to fulfil the requirements of the second degree will be reflected in the transcript and included in the computation of the GPA for the single degree. No DDP withdrawal is allowed in the midst of a semester (except for graduating cases). DDP students can request to withdraw from the second degree after results release up to the first week of the following semester.
