During NeurIPS week on 4 December, NUS Computing hosted its first network session and reception in San Diego, bringing together researchers, industry leaders, and partners for an evening of exchange and connection.

Hosted by Associate Professor Bryan Low, the session offered guests a window into NUS Computing’s vision and priorities. Conversations centred on how the School supports bold research, develops future leaders, and builds a strong sense of community – themes that resonated throughout the evening.

Faculty members – Provost’s Chair Professor Mohan Kankanhalli, Professor Ng See Kiong, Associate Professors Lee Gim Hee and Wang Ye, and Assistant Professor Ling Chun Kai – engaged guests on research highlights, collaborations with industry and big tech, as well as faculty openings and funding opportunities. Rather than formal presentations, the focus was on dialogue – sharing ideas, exploring synergies, and learning from one another.

Associate Professor Low also shared NUS Computing’s “3Cs”:

  • First, championing bold initiatives by providing the environment and resources to tackle grand challenges, enabling research that goes beyond publications to deliver real-world impact and thought leadership.
  • Second, cultivating future leaders through mentorship and care for the next generation who will shape tomorrow’s society.
  • Third, community, inspired by Singapore’s kampung spirit – a diverse, global collective that is collegial, collaborative, and caring.

The discussion also covered initiatives beyond the School. At the university level, the NUS Artificial Intelligence Institute brings together faculty and researchers across disciplines within the University to advance fundamental AI research and AI+X initiatives. At the national level, AI Singapore was highlighted as a joint effort between academia, government, and industry to strengthen Singapore’s AI capabilities.

Colleagues from the National AI Group at the Ministry of Digital Development and information were also present, reflecting the close working relationship between government and academia in advancing AI talent and research in Singapore.

Overall, the session provided a platform for exchange and conversation among researchers, industry partners, and collaborators during NeurIPS week.
