Our brain can easily estimate the 3D position and the orientation of the objects we see. This task, however, is non-trivial for computers and robots. Computer scientists have been working on the problem of recovering the 3D position and orientation of objects in data captured from image sensors for years. This problem, formulated as the ‘pose estimation’ problem, is important because recovering the position and orientation of objects in a scene is often a necessary step to understanding the scene.

With Singapore pushing forward with its Smart Nation Initiatives, Associate Professor Terence Sim shared that having personal details online could risk identity theft. He recommends having larger penalties for the digital crime and more legislation on what constitute as identity theft. Dr Sim also added that while technology brings greater convenience to our lives, he feels that digitisation will bring about even more benefits in the future.

Associate Professor Terence Sim began his research in facial recognition technology since 1998. He said that while facial recognition can be used in many fields, but it is used mainly for security purposes due to the ease of using cameras to carry out large scale screening. However, A/P Sim highlighted that the rate of error for facial recognition is higher than fingerprint and iris recognition. He cautions that the authories be careful before adopting the technology due to its high risk. A/P Sim recommends for the government to create a more comprehensive law to protect privacy to prevent identity theft. Technology companies need to ensure that their data is secure and materials are not easily stolen. A/P Sim also highlighted the necessity to distinguish between "proof of identity" and "proof of authorisation". One pitfall of the technology is that the technology is not transferrable and cannot be cancelled, unlike passwords and physical passes. NUS Computing is studying how to make facial recognition more secure and it is developing a dynamic face recognition system to improve accuracy. A trial on 39 pairs of twins proved successful, and A/P Sim said it is because everyone's expressions are different and not easily replicated.

From January this year, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) Singapore has begun collecting iris images from Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents as another identifier. Associate Professor Terence Sim shared that the irises of each person is unique, hard to impersonate, and have more complex imaging. He also suggested using infrared vein recognition technology applied to faces and palms to enhance security.
