SoC Industry PhD Programme (SoC-IPP)

The SoC-IPP aims to establish a pool of doctoral research talent in Singapore with industry-relevant skill-sets through training in both the academic and corporate R&D environment.

Candidates admitted through the SoC-IPP are typically full-time employees of the company while pursuing PhD research at NUS School of Computing (SoC). The School has research collaborations with various companies such as PayPal, Grab, SalesforceAlibabaXilinxLesaffre, Yitu, Sea etc

Candidates who are interested to pursue a higher academic calling, while working at the forefront of technology inleading companies are welcomed to apply for this programme. Such candidates must meet the admission requirements of the NUS-SoC’s PhD programme in Computer Science or Information Systems and go through all necessary academic milestones. When submitting the PhD application, candidates should indicate their research interests and/or companies they are interested to work for in their personal statement.

In addition to the online PhD application, IPP applicants must also email the following items to

 (i) statement of purpose
(ii) cv
(iii) transcripts of their academic qualifications

Companies who are interested to participate in the SoC-IPP may contact us scope a suitable project with NUS-SoC for potential PhD candidates who are currently/ potentially will be their employee(s). The company must appoint a suitable researcher with established R&D track record to be the co-advisor for the admitted candidate.

Economic Development Board Industrial Postgraduate Programme (EDB IPP)

Candidates under EDB-IPP

  • Admitted IPP candidates must be full-time employees of the company while pursuing full-time research programmes at NUS School of Computing.
  • The candidate is expected to spend at least 50% of the research project activity within the company’s facility.
  • The candidate will undertake an approved jointly-identified research project, and be supervised by an NUS SoC full-time faculty member and a company staff with appropriate research qualifications.
  • The award is governed by the following conditions:
  1. The candidate must be a Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident.
  2. The candidate must meet the prevailing admission criteria for research programmes to SoC.
  3. There is no bond requirement. Candidate should be either a new hire or existing employee of the company.
  4. Sponsorship terms by EDB & company includes full tuition fees for research programme, monthly salary and employer’s CPF contribution (remuneration is determined by company).

Companies
The requirements of the company:

  • Singapore-based entity.
  • Possess the capacity and ability to scope and conduct an industrial postgraduate project with the academic partner, such as:
    • Assign suitable PhD-level company R&D leaders to be advisors.
    • Have an established corporate R&D lab in Singapore with a sizeable team of PhD. researchers and a good track record of research activities.
    • Demonstrate commitment to support trainee(s) towards attaining a postgraduate degree within stipulated candidatures.
    • Have visibility of the R&D role in which trainee will be employed upon completion of the IPP project.

Company’s contributions:

  • Supervision and hosting of IPP candidates at research facility.
  • Co-share research grant to academic faculties for cost incurred at faculties.
  • Funds all other costs related to IPP Project and IPP trainee-incurred expenses (eg. insurance, equipment, travel, conferences, publications, etc).


Research Projects, Contractual Agreement & Intellectual Property Arrangements

NUS faculty members who wish to participate in EDB-IPP should, jointly with the collaborating company, contact EDB on sponsorship of the IPP/submission of project proposals. The project proposed for IPP should also be submitted to NUS SoC for approval.

Companies will then work with NUS and EDB to formulate contractual agreements for each project undertaken by the IPP candidate, company and NUS. Intellectual property arrangements arising from IPP projects undertaken by IPP candidates are to be agreed upon by both the company and NUS.
