Singapore has become a prime destination for many of the world’s biggest technology companies to set up their offices. Professor Sanjay Jain attributed the growing popularity of Computing among students to the job prospects available. He added that the starting salaries of Computing graduates are comparable to students from Law and Medicine. A team of NUS Computing students created an app, Track Pack, which uses NFC technology to track the location of household items. The students shared how Computing is growing in popularity, and that the prospects in Computing are becoming better than traditionally popular courses like Medicine, Business and Law. The number of undergraduate intake increased by 16%, and the school plans to increase the intake of Masters students by 30%.

Dealing with foreign currencies and ever-fluid exchange rates can be frustrating for consumers. Local start-up RateX aims to "flatten" cross- border online shopping by offering real exchange rates without additional or hidden transaction fees. Designed by Computer Science students Lim Jing Rong and Davis Gay as well as Economics student Goh Jian Kai, the online payment tool matches the sum of an online overseas purchase with rates from currency exchange websites. This allows the user to pay for the purchase in his local currency.

NUS launching 18-month internships

NUS is restructuring its curriculum to allow some of its students to go on work attachments for as long as 18 months, starting from the new academic year in August. Anecdotally, many students do end up receiving offers at the end of their work stints. NUS computer science graduate Rey Neo Zhi Lei, 25, also landed his job as a software engineer at PayPal after interning there in his final year.

Former ITE boy pursues dream at NUS with scholarship

First-year Computer Science student Quek Kai Yu was last year awarded the National Infocomm Scholarship, presented by the Infocomm Media Development Authority to promising undergraduates pursuing an infocomm-related course. Inspired by his interaction with his parents who are both partially deaf-mute, Kai Yu wants to create a device that can interpret sign language by detecting hand movements using a video camera and translating them into English text.
