NUS Computing welcomes three new faculty members

30 January 2018 – Three new faculty members have joined the Department of Computer Science in NUS Computing. They are:

Dr Kuldeep S. Meel

Dr Kuldeep officially joined NUS Computing as an Assistant Professor on 26 December 2017. He recently obtained his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Rice University, Texas, USA. He received his Master of Science degree in Computer Science from Rice University and his Bachelor’s degree (Honours) in Computer Science & Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India.

Dr Kuldeep’s research is centered on the design of computational techniques for constrained sampling and counting, scalable and accurate probabilistic research with applications to diverse domains such as power grid resilience, hardware and software verification.

His research areas including computer vision and pattern recognition; multimedia coding and retrieval; as well as biometric authentication. He is a member of the Phi Tau Phi Scholastic Honor Society, a Fellow of IEEE, and a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers, Singapore.

Dr Jonathan Scarlett

Dr Scarlett officially joined NUS Computing as an Assistant Professor on 15 January 2018. He holds a joint appointment in the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science. Dr Scarlett obtained his Ph.D. degree in Engineering from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, in 2015. He obtained his double Bachelor’s degrees (Honours) in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Melbourne, Australia, in 2010.

Prior to joining the department, Dr Scarlett was a post-doctoral researcher in the Laboratory for Information and Inference Systems at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland. Dr Scarlett’s research interests are in the areas of information theory, machine learning, high-dimensional statistics, and signal processing.

Dr Xiao Xiaokui

Dr Xiao officially joined NUS Computing as an Associate Professor on 25 January 2018. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2008. He obtained his Master of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in Computer Science from the South China University of Technology, China, in 2004 and 2001, respectively.

Prior to joining the department, Dr Xiao was an Associate Professor at the School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Dr Xiao’s research interests are in the areas of data management, especially data privacy and algorithms for large data.
