Sometime between 2019 and 2020, a curious phenomenon began surfacing on Signal, FaceTime, and four other mobile messaging applications: someone could ring a person up and listen in to the audio of their surroundings — all without the receiving party picking up the call.

Ooi Beng Chin, Lee Kong Chian Centennial Professor at NUS and faculty member at School of Computing, has been elected as a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The election was recently held at the CAS General Assembly on 16 November 2023.

15 Jun 2023 — A team of researchers from NUS Presidential Young Professor Reza Shokri's lab has been honoured with the Best Paper Award at the sixth annual ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency (ACM FAccT) held in Chicago. The awarded paper entitled "On The Impact of Machine Learning Randomness on Group Fairness," addresses the variability in statistical measures for group fairness in machine learning and investigates the role of different sources of randomness in training neural networks.

29 May 2023 - Singapore Blockchain Innovation Programme (SBIP), hosted by the National University of Singapore (NUS) School of Computing, and InterOpera have successfully completed a nine-month Proof of Concept (PoC) with InterOpera to develop a model of interoperability for regulated capital markets, to tackle cross-chain connectivity while automating regulatory requirements in capital markets. This potentially optimises existing capital market transactions by lowering operational costs, increasing market liquidity, and creating new investment options.

28 March 2023 – Lee Kong Chian Centennial Professor Ooi Beng Chin from the NUS School of Computing has been elected as Fellow of the prestigious Academy of Engineering, Singapore (SAEng) in February 2023. The SAEng serves as a think tank on engineering-related public policy and steers initiatives in the areas of strategic importance to Singapore so as to meet the challenges of the new millennium.

26 May 2022 — NUS Computing PhD graduate Dr Ruan Pingcheng received an Honourable Mention for the ACM SIGMOD Jim Gray Dissertation Award 2022 in late April this year for his dissertation, Blockchains: Novel Data Systems and Beyond.

5 April 2021 - Professor Shen Heng Tao, an NUS Computing undergraduate and postgraduate alumnus (Class of 2000 and Class of 2004 respectively), was named a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) early this year.

24 June 2020 – NUS Computing Distinguished Professor Ooi Beng Chin and his team have won a 2020 ACM SIGMOD Research Highlight Award at the 2020 ACM SIGMOD/PODS International Conference on Management of Data, which was held online from 14 to 19 June. The conference is a leading international forum for researchers who explore and advance research on data management.

19 November 2019 – Computer Science PhD students Tran Duc Muoi and Wang Taining were conferred the 2019 Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) Fellowship on 8 November. Muoi and Taining received their award at MSRA’s Academic Day 2019 event held at the MSRA headquarters in Beijing, China.

7 November 2019 – An artificial intelligence (AI) engine built by NUS Computing's database system research group has become the first software tool from Southeast Asia to be ranked in the top 300 projects by the Apache Software Foundation (ASF), the largest open-source software community in the world.

19 August 2019 – Computer Science PhD student Ruan Pingcheng received the Best Paper Award at the 45th International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (VLDB) held in Los Angeles, California, from 26 to 30 August this year.

16 August 2019 – Two new faculty members have joined the Department of Computer Science in NUS Computing.
