Professor Ooi Beng Chin elected as a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

Ooi Beng Chin, Lee Kong Chian Centennial Professor at NUS and faculty member at School of Computing, has been elected as a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The election was recently held at the CAS General Assembly on 16 November 2023.

Prof Ooi was among 30 foreign members that the CAS has recognised for their significant contributions to the field of science and technology in China and are holding high academic status internationally. This is one of China’s highest prestige awarded to citizens of a foreign country.

Besides his post at the School of Computing, Prof Ooi has also been active in the Chinese academic landscape and industry. He is an adjunct Chang Jiang Professor at Zhejiang University and a visiting Distinguished Professor at Tsinghua University. He is an overseas council member of China Computer Federation (CCF), and has won CCF Overseas Outstanding Contributions Award in 2016.

Prof Ooi’s research delves into the fundamental data and systems abstractions of modern data-driven applications. His works lay the foundation for the design and implementation of systems that are not only efficient and robust, but also scalable and secure.

As an eminent scientist in the field, he has been bestowed with numerous awards acknowledging his contributions to database research. Some of these recent awards include 2021 NUS University Research Recognition Award and 2020 ACM SIGMOD E.F. Codd Innovation Award which is the highest honour in the Database area.

Additionally, Prof Ooi is a fellow of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Singapore Academy of Science (SNAS), and Singapore Academy of Engineering (SAEng), and a foreign member of Academia Europaea.

He works closely with the industry and hospitals, and is serving as a director of ComfortDelgro, VICOM, and AlDiGi.

“I am elated to be elected as a Foreign Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and hope to continue providing the technical leadership to advance the research in AI, Big Data, Cloud Computing, and application areas such as Healthcare and Finance in Asia,” he expressed.
