12 May 2022 — NUS Computing Assistant Professor Brian Lim has received the Google Research Scholar Award, which aims to support world-class research conducted by early-career professors at institutions around the world.

Dr Lim is the first Singaporean to receive the Google Research Scholar Award.

The award will support his research on the dual-need for user-centric explainable artificial intelligence (AI) and privacy, which are two critical components for the responsible use of AI.

Dr Lim’s work focuses on understanding human reasoning and developing AI that gives explanations that are relatable and intuitive. However, there are also other conflicting demands for the responsible use of AI, including privacy protection. Therefore, it is paramount to develop AI solutions that satisfy the criteria of explainability and privacy.

“I am deeply honoured to receive this prestigious award. It recognises the significant efforts by my team and motivates us to continue to make impactful contributions in human-centered explainable AI,” said Dr Lim.
