NUS-Nagoya University Computing Exchange Builds
Cross-Cultural Learning in AI and Robotics

NUS School of Computing took part in its first-ever reciprocal computing exchange programme with the School of Informatics at Nagoya University.

From 8 to 16 December, 14 NUS Computing students joined their counterparts in Nagoya for an academic and cultural immersion focused on artificial intelligence, robotics, and system design. They were joined by 18 Nagoya University students, forming mixed teams that encouraged collaboration across disciplines, cultures, and perspectives.

The programme combined classroom learning with hands-on exposure to advanced research environments. Students visited leading laboratories working on android robotics, medical AI, and virtual reality, and toured DENSO’s Advanced Research Center, where they explored real-world applications of human–machine interaction and intelligent systems.

A key highlight was the full-day System Design Day, where NUS and Nagoya students worked in cross-institutional teams to tackle complex design challenges. Through expert-led lectures and collaborative problem-solving, participants sharpened their system-thinking skills while learning how diverse cultural approaches shape engineering decisions.

Beyond the classroom, students experienced Japanese culture through campus activities and site visits, including a trip to Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage village. These shared experiences deepened friendships and fostered mutual understanding alongside the academic programme.

This exchange follows a visit by Nagoya University students to NUS in July 2025, marking the first bidirectional student exchange between the two schools. It reflects a growing commitment by both institutions to long-term collaboration in education and research, particularly in areas shaping the future of intelligent systems.

Both universities plan to build on this initiative as part of their ongoing collaboration in education and research.
